MYOB vs Xero in 2026: prices, AI and which one automates better.
What every plan costs in Australian dollars, how each one handles inventory, payroll and jobs, and the question most comparisons skip: how easily your accounting software connects to everything else.
Is MYOB or Xero better for an Australian business?
Xero is the better choice for most Australian small businesses that want to connect other tools and automate admin, because its app ecosystem and API are more open. MYOB is the better choice for businesses that need inventory, job costing and unlimited payroll in one product, especially manufacturers, without adding extra apps.
Both do the core job well: invoicing, bank reconciliation, GST and BAS, payroll with Single Touch Payroll. Your accountant can work in either. The real differences show up in three places: what each plan includes for the price, how well it handles stock and jobs, and how easily it talks to your other software and to AI. That last one matters more every year, and it is where we spend most of our time with clients.
A note before the numbers: we do not sell or resell either product. We build automations on top of both, so this is written from the side of the business trying to get data in and out of them.
How much do MYOB and Xero cost in 2026?
Xero runs from A$37 a month for Ignite to A$250 a month for Ultimate 50, with GST included. MYOB runs from A$99 a year for Solo to A$210 a month for AccountRight Premier. In the middle, MYOB Pro is A$70 a month against Xero Grow at A$78.
Both vendors discount heavily for new customers, so the price you pay for the first few months is rarely the price you pay after. The table shows the regular monthly price each vendor lists once the offer ends. Xero states its prices include GST. MYOB's offer fine print quotes its prices including GST too, but check your own checkout.
| Plan | Regular price (AUD) | Payroll | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xero Ignite | A$37 a month | 1 person | Only 5 bills can be entered. Fine for a sole trader, tight for anyone else. |
| Xero Grow | A$78 a month | 2 people | Automated bill entry, and JAX matches confident bank transactions for you. |
| Xero Comprehensive | A$107 a month | 5 people | Adds multiple currencies and auto-reconcile. |

Which is better for trades and manufacturers?
For a manufacturer holding real stock, MYOB AccountRight Plus or Premier covers inventory, job budgets and payroll in one product. Xero handles basic stock, then expects you to add an inventory app. For trades, Xero usually wins because the job management apps tradies use connect to it first.
Xero's own inventory page puts it plainly: start with Xero's inventory tools, then add an app from the Xero App Store when you need more. For a business with bills of materials, multiple warehouses or batch tracking, that second app is not optional, and it is a second subscription and a second system to keep in sync.
Trades are different. Most trade businesses we talk to run ServiceM8, Tradify, Simpro or a similar job app, and the job app is where the work lives. The accounting software just has to receive clean invoices and payments. Across 32 sales calls we ran in October 2026, Xero came up in about 20 and MYOB in two. That is not a market survey, but it matches what we see: trades lean to Xero, older manufacturing and family businesses lean to MYOB.
Which one connects better to AI and other apps?
Xero. It lists more than 1,000 connected apps, publishes a free starter tier for its developer platform, and maintains an official MCP server so AI tools like Claude can read and create invoices, contacts and reports. MYOB has a public API, but access starts with an application and there is no MYOB-built AI connector that we could find.
Here is what that means in practice. When we connect a business's accounting system to an AI assistant or an automation, we need three things: a way in (an API), permission to use it, and something already built that saves us writing it from scratch.
- Xero has all three. Its developer pricing includes a free Starter tier for up to five connections, with paid tiers from A$35 a month (excluding GST) for apps serving more businesses. Xero also publishes an official MCP server, which is the plug that lets Claude and similar tools work with your books. Our guide to Xero integrations covers which connections are worth setting up.
- MYOB has a Business API that covers its cloud files and AccountRight. To use it you apply through MYOB's developer program. The AI connectors for MYOB that exist today are from third parties, not MYOB.
One thing to know about Xero: its developer terms now say data from Xero's API may not be used to train AI models. That does not stop an AI assistant reading your invoices to answer a question or draft a reminder. It does mean any vendor building on Xero should be able to tell you where your data goes.
None of this means MYOB businesses cannot automate. It means the build takes a little more setup at the start. We connect both on our AI integration projects, and the work is much the same once the connection is in place.
On MYOB or Xero and still typing the same numbers into three systems? We connect your accounting software to the tools around it so quotes, invoices and reports move on their own.
See AI integrationWhat AI features do MYOB and Xero have built in?
Both now ship AI inside the product. Xero's assistant is called JAX and, from the Grow plan up, matches bank transactions it is confident about. MYOB's is Iris: Ask Iris answers questions about your numbers on Pro and Plus, with AI reconciliation, insights and an AI BAS agent, several still in beta.
These features are useful, and they are getting better. They are also limited to what happens inside the accounting file. They will not read a supplier's emailed invoice in your inbox, check it against the purchase order in your job app and chase the customer who has not paid. That kind of job crosses systems, and it is where most of the hours in a small business go.
So the honest answer to "which has better AI" is: the built-in AI is close enough that it should not decide your choice. How easily the software connects to the rest of your business should.
Should you switch from MYOB to Xero?
Only if MYOB is blocking something specific, such as an app you need that only connects to Xero. Switching costs months of history, retraining and a messy end of quarter. If the pain is double entry and overtime, fix the connections first. That usually costs less than migrating.
We get asked this a lot, and our answer is usually no. The businesses that ask are rarely unhappy with MYOB as accounting software. They are unhappy with the hours around it: quotes built in spreadsheets, invoices retyped from a job sheet, reports pulled together by hand every Monday. Moving those same habits into Xero changes nothing.
Where switching does make sense: you are about to sell and the buyer's accountant wants Xero, you need an app that only connects to Xero, or you are a new business choosing for the first time. If you are starting fresh and do not hold much stock, Xero is the easier base to build on.
What should you automate first, whichever you choose?
Start with the job that eats the most hours every week and touches the accounting file. For most businesses that is getting supplier bills in, getting invoices out and chasing unpaid ones. Reporting is a close second, because someone is usually building the same spreadsheet by hand every week.
- Bills and invoices. Supplier invoices read from email, matched to the right job and entered as a draft for someone to approve. Customer invoices raised from the finished job, not retyped. Our invoice automation work does this on both MYOB and Xero.
- Overdue follow-ups. Reminders that read the account history and change tone, rather than one template sent three times.
- Reports. The Monday numbers, job profit and cash position pulled from the accounting file and the job app into one view. See automated reporting.
One more reason to do this early: key-person risk. A Melbourne concreting business we spoke to had accounts payable and receivable stop for four weeks while the one person who ran them was on leave. Software choice did not cause that. Everything living in one person's head did.
Your accounting software is rarely the problem. The typing between it and everything else is.
Common questions
Is MYOB cheaper than Xero?
Usually, at the same level. MYOB Lite is A$35 a month against Xero Ignite at A$37, and MYOB Pro is A$70 against Xero Grow at A$78. MYOB charges extra per employee for payroll on Lite and Pro, so a business with staff should add that in.
Do accountants prefer MYOB or Xero?
Many Australian accountants and bookkeepers work in both. Ask yours which they use day to day, because a file they know well costs less to look after at tax time.
Can I move from MYOB to Xero myself?
You can, but most businesses are better off having their bookkeeper or a conversion service do it, and switching at the start of a quarter or financial year so the BAS is clean.
Does MYOB work on a Mac?
MYOB Lite and Pro run fully in the browser, so yes. AccountRight Plus and Premier include some software that downloads on Windows computers, so check that before you choose them for a Mac office.
Can ChatGPT or Claude connect to MYOB or Xero?
Yes. Xero publishes an official connector that Claude and similar tools can use. MYOB can be connected through its API or a third-party connector. Either way, set it up so the AI can draft but a person approves anything that changes your books.
