How to choose an AI consulting company in Australia, including whether it should be us.
Every AI consulting company says roughly the same things: strategy, capability, results. This page is the buyer's guide we wish more clients arrived with. Five questions that separate the firms that build working systems from the deck factories, and our own answers to each, in writing. We are Scalify, based in Perth, working Australia-wide.
How do you choose an AI consulting company in Australia?
Ask five questions before you sign anything: can I speak to a named client, who owns what you build, is the price fixed, does the person scoping the work do the work, and what happens when you leave. Firms that build real systems answer all five directly. Firms that sell documents change the subject.
The market is crowded because the label is free. Marketing agencies, software resellers and one-person operations have all rebranded as AI consulting companies over the last couple of years, and from the outside the websites look identical: the same promises, the same stock photography, the same wall of anonymous logos. The five questions cut through because each one has to be answered with something you can check. We are a Perth firm you might be comparing right now, so rather than ask you to take our copy on trust, we have put our own answers in the table.
| The question | Why it matters | Our answer |
|---|---|---|
| Can I speak to a named client? | Anyone can fill a page with logos. A named business can be looked up, rung and asked. | Yes. Every success story on our site names the business and shows real photos. |
| Who owns what you build? | Some firms rent you your own system and bill you to keep it alive. | You do. Code, prompts, accounts and documentation all sit on your side. |
| Is the price fixed? | Open-ended hourly billing rewards slow work and punishes you for asking questions. | Yes. Everything is quoted before you commit, with no meter running. |
| Does the person scoping the work do the work? | A partner wins the job, a graduate delivers it, and quality falls in the gap. | Yes. The director who scopes your engagement leads it through to handover. |
| What happens when you leave? | If the system stops without them, you never really owned it. | It keeps running. We document, train your people and hand over the keys. |
What are the red flags?
Open-ended hourly billing, no named clients, strategy sold without delivery, and vendor partner badges offered as the main proof. None of them guarantees a bad outcome, but each one moves risk from the consultant onto you. Two or more together, keep looking.
An open hourly arrangement moves all the risk onto you, which is why our work is priced whole, before it starts. A logo wall with nothing behind it usually means no client agreed to be named. Strategy sold without delivery tends to end up as shelfware, because the people who wrote it never had to build it. And a partner badge tells you a firm has committed to selling one vendor's products; it says nothing about whether those products fit your business. We hold no partner badges on purpose. We build on Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic models under business terms, no vendor pays for a seat in our advice, and that independence is what lets us tell you when the honest answer is no.
If an AI consulting company cannot name a single client, everything else on the website is decoration. Ours are named because the results were real enough that the owners were happy to put their name to them.
What should an engagement look like?
A small fixed first step, then a pilot with a number on it, then rollout. You should never be asked to commit to a large program before anything has worked inside your business. A good AI consulting company will happily start small, for a known price, and let the result argue for the next stage.
Ours starts with the AI audit: half a day inside your operation, then a costed roadmap of the jobs worth automating, quoting, purchase order chasing, monthly reporting and the rest. If you want the thinking to go deeper before anything gets built, that is our consulting work. Either way, what follows should take the same shape, and it is the shape we would insist on from anyone you hire, including us.
The shape to insist on
Four stages, each one small enough to walk away from.
A fixed first look
A short, fixed-price engagement that maps where the hours and dollars actually go and what each job would be worth automated. If nothing stacks up, it ends here and you have lost half a day.
A pilot with a number
One job, one team, a measurable target set before it starts. Weeks rather than months, and judged on the number, not the demo.
Rollout
What worked in the pilot expands across the department or the company, wired into the systems you already run: MYOB, Xero, Microsoft 365 and the industry software nobody else will touch.
Handover
Documentation, training and the keys. You own the system, and keeping us around afterwards is a choice, not a dependency.
Does it matter where the company is based?
Less than it used to, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling geography. Most consulting work runs fine over a screen. But somebody still has to stand in your office and see where the day actually goes, and that is easier for a firm in your city and your time zone.
We are based in Ardross in Perth, and most of our clients are WA businesses we can drive to. Plenty of east coast firms run Perth landing pages with nobody on the ground, and the reverse happens too, so we are plain about how we work: clients in the eastern states get the same engagements delivered remotely, with onsite time when the work genuinely needs it, usually the first day of discovery. If what you are actually weighing up is automation agencies rather than consultancies, we have written the same straight treatment of that market on our AI automation agency page.
Who will we actually deal with?
At Scalify, the director. Kristian scopes every engagement, leads the thinking and stays on the job through the build, with senior engineers behind him. At most firms the person who wins your work hands it to someone you have never met; here the person who scopes the work does the work.
That structure is why the results on our success stories page carry real business names and real photos rather than anonymous logos. Better Looking Shutters doubled revenue while about $250k a year of admin cost came out of the business. General Crane Services WA had staff build an AI quoting system after our training, and we secured it and implemented it on Azure; quoting that used to take days now takes minutes. Those owners put their names to the work because they dealt with the same people from the first conversation to handover. How we run engagements end to end is on our approach page.
Common questions
What does an AI consulting company do?
A good one finds the jobs in your business where AI pays for itself, prices the saving, then builds the system and hands it over. A weak one produces a strategy document and leaves. Both use the same label, so ask which one you are buying.
How is Scalify different from the big consulting firms?
The director runs your engagement from the first call to handover, not a bench you never met at the pitch. The advice comes in plain language, the people who scope the work build it, and you see the full price before you sign. Big firms are built for long transformation programs; we are built for the first few automations that pay for themselves.
Do you only work in Perth?
No. The office is in Ardross and most of the client list is WA, but state lines do not change the work: eastern states businesses get the same engagement, delivered remotely, with onsite days where they genuinely earn their airfare.
Who owns the systems you build?
You do. Code, prompts, documentation and accounts all sit on your side. If we disappeared tomorrow, everything would keep running, and any competent developer could pick it up from the documentation.
How do you charge?
A single price on paper before you sign, for every engagement, and the first phone call costs nothing. We do not bill by the hour; an open meter is on the red flag list for a reason.
Can we talk to your past clients?
Our success stories name the businesses: Better Looking Shutters, Shimicoat, General Crane Services WA, PSG Plant Hire, JBP Consultancy and Stop Renting Perth. That is deliberate, because a named client can be checked. Ask when we talk and we will point you to the story closest to your situation.
What size of business do you work with?
Mostly businesses with 50 to 500 staff, though some of our named clients are smaller owner-run operations. Below about ten staff a full consulting engagement is usually overkill, and we will say so; training or a single automation is often the better start.
