Claude Cowork for business: what it is and what you can hand it.
Cowork is the part of Claude that does the work instead of talking about it. Here is what a business owner can realistically give it, where it falls over, and which plan you need.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is the mode of Claude that carries out multi-step jobs for you. You give it a goal, and it plans the steps, works through your files and connected tools, and hands back finished work: a spreadsheet, a report, a sorted folder. It is included on every paid Claude plan, not on Free.
Anthropic describes it as bringing the working style of Claude Code to everyday knowledge work, without a terminal. In plain terms: ordinary Claude answers a question and waits for the next one. Cowork takes a job like "go through this folder of supplier invoices, pull out every price change and put it in a spreadsheet" and does the whole thing, step by step, while you get on with something else.
It can read and write files in folders you connect, use connectors to tools like Microsoft 365 or Google Drive, browse the web, and run tasks on a schedule. The details below come from Anthropic's Cowork help article and product page, checked 29 October 2026.
Is Cowork still separate from Claude chat?
Not for long. On 16 September 2026 Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, so you no longer pick a mode first. Pro and Max get the merged version first, Team and Free follow, and Enterprise became generally available on 23 October. Existing Cowork projects, connectors and skills carry over.
That comes from Anthropic's announcement. Until the change reaches your account, you will still see Cowork as its own option next to Chat. Once it does, Claude decides for itself when a request needs the multi-step treatment. The name "Cowork" may fade, but the capability is the same, and it is still what people search for, so that is what we call it here.
Which Claude plans include Cowork?
Every paid plan includes Cowork: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free does not. The difference between plans is how much you can run before you hit a usage limit, and on Team and Enterprise, the admin controls that let an owner decide what staff can switch on.
| Plan | US price | Cowork | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not included | Chat only. |
| Pro | US$20 a month, or US$17 billed yearly | Included | Enough to learn on. Long jobs use up the limit quickly. |
| Max | From US$100 a month | Included | Five or twenty times Pro's usage, for someone running Cowork most days. |
| Team | From US$25 a seat a month, or US$20 billed yearly | Included | Admin controls over connectors and approvals. Web and mobile Cowork still in beta. |
| Enterprise | US$20 a seat billed yearly, plus usage | Included, switched on by an owner | For larger organisations with compliance needs. |
Prices are from Anthropic's pricing page. For what each plan costs in Australian dollars, see our Claude pricing guide for Australia.
What can a business owner actually hand Cowork?
Anything that is a repeatable job on documents, spreadsheets, email or the web, where you can describe what good looks like. Sorting, summarising, comparing, drafting and pulling numbers together are its strengths. Final decisions, pricing calls and anything sent to a client without a human check are not.
From the owners we work with in our training rooms and on calls, the jobs that suit it best look like this:
- Turning a pile into a summary. A month of job notes, site reports or meeting transcripts into one page of open items and risks.
- Pulling numbers from documents. Supplier price lists, invoices or approval PDFs into a spreadsheet you can check, with the source page noted.
- Drafting from your own templates. Proposals, scopes of work and quote letters, written from your past examples rather than generic text. Our post on Claude skills covers how to teach it your format once so you stop re-explaining.
- A weekly report that builds itself. A scheduled task that gathers the week's figures from connected tools and saves a summary for Monday morning.
- Tidying the digital shed. Renaming and filing hundreds of documents into a folder structure you describe once.
Most owners we meet already use Claude or ChatGPT as a chat box. The step up they are after is exactly this: less constant prompting, more work handed over whole. That is the same thinking behind automating admin with AI, just done by the owner on their own machine.
Want your team handing real jobs to Cowork, set up properly on your own files and tools? Our Claude training does the setup with you and has each person run a job on their own work before they leave.
See Claude trainingDo you need the Claude desktop app for Cowork?
For anything that touches files on your computer, yes. The Claude desktop app for Mac and Windows (Linux is in beta) is what lets Cowork read and write your local folders and use the browser. Cloud tasks, scheduled tasks and jobs started from your phone run without it.
This trips people up. A Cowork job working on local files needs the desktop app open and connected for the whole task. If the laptop goes to sleep or the app closes, the job may stop. Scheduled tasks and cloud sessions are different: Anthropic says they keep running with the laptop shut.
The other thing to know: what Cowork builds lives in your Claude account, not in a folder on your desktop. We have had workshop graduates convinced their work had vanished because they went looking on their computer. Open the Claude app, on desktop or phone, and it is there.
What are Cowork's limits?
It uses your usage allowance fast, local jobs stop when your computer sleeps, and it can miss things in a big batch without telling you. It is an assistant that works unsupervised for stretches, not a system that runs your business. Anything that must happen every single time belongs in a proper automation.
- Usage. Every step in a multi-step job uses tokens, so a long Cowork run eats a Pro allowance far faster than chat. Group related work into one task and start fresh for unrelated jobs.
- Accuracy on volume. It is good, not perfect. Spot-check its output, especially counts and figures, until you trust a particular job.
- Reliability. A job you trigger and watch is one thing. A job that has to fire on every incoming email, forever, is another.
- Sharing. You cannot share a Cowork session with a colleague, only the files and artifacts it produced.
Anthropic has improved scheduled tasks since then, and they now run in the cloud. Our rule has not changed: if missing one run costs you a job, build it as an automation with checks, or as one of the AI teams we set up for clients, not as a Cowork task you hope fires.
Is Cowork safe to use with business data?
It can be, with the right setup. Cowork can only read and write folders you connect, asks before permanently deleting files, and lets you choose how much it does without asking. Use it on a Team or Enterprise account for company data, keep approvals on, and connect only the folders a job needs.
Cowork has three permission modes. Manual asks before each action. Auto approves read-only actions and has Claude check riskier ones for things like data leaking out or hidden instructions in a web page. Skip checks nothing, and Anthropic's own advice is to use it only when you completely trust everything involved. For a business, stay on Manual or Auto.
Anthropic is plain that Cowork carries extra risk because it acts on its own and has internet access. On Team and Enterprise, owners can turn off web search, decide whether Auto mode is available at all, and require approval for any connector that can write or change data. If you handle health, legal or NDIS information, settle where that data may go before anyone connects a folder. Our security page covers how we approach it on every build.
Cowork or Claude Code: which should you use?
Use Cowork for work on documents, spreadsheets, email and research. Use Claude Code when you are building something that runs on its own: a quoting tool, a client form, a dashboard. They work the same way underneath, but Claude Code is better at building apps and websites.
That is the answer we give workshop graduates who ask. A tax advisor who came through our training, now on our AustAsia Group success story, built the firm's client onboarding form with Claude Code, because a form clients fill in is software, not a task. The same person might use Cowork on a Tuesday afternoon to sort a client's paperwork. Most owners end up using both.
Hand Cowork the thinking jobs you start yourself. Anything that has to happen every time gets built properly.
Common questions
Is Claude Cowork free?
No. Cowork is only on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. The Free plan covers chat. Pro is the cheapest way in, and our Claude pricing guide has the Australian figures.
Does Claude Cowork work on Windows?
Yes. The Claude desktop app runs Cowork on macOS and Windows, with Linux in beta. You can also start Cowork jobs from the web and the mobile app, though local file access needs the desktop app.
Can Cowork keep working when my laptop is closed?
Cloud and scheduled tasks can. Anthropic says they do not need your computer awake or the app open. A job working on files on your computer needs the desktop app open for the whole task.
Can Cowork connect to Xero, Gmail or Microsoft 365?
Through connectors, yes, for tools that have one. Microsoft 365 and Google tools are common ones. On Team accounts the organisation owner controls which connectors staff can switch on, so set that up first.
How do I start a scheduled task in Cowork?
Type /schedule in a task, or open Scheduled in the sidebar, and pick daily, weekly or monthly. Start with something low-stakes, like a Monday summary, and check the first few runs before you rely on it.
Checked 29 October 2026. Cowork is changing quickly as it merges into Claude chat, and prices are Anthropic's US list prices; check your own account and checkout for current details.
