Microsoft Copilot pricing in Australia: what it costs and when it pays.
Free Copilot Chat, the Copilot Business add-on, the bundles and the enterprise licence. What each one costs in Australian dollars, what you actually get, and how to tell if paid seats will earn their keep in your business.
How much does Microsoft Copilot cost in Australia?
Microsoft 365 Copilot Business costs AU$31.40 per user a month on a yearly plan, or AU$37.68 paid monthly, both before GST. Until 31 December 2026 eligible businesses can get the first year at AU$26.91. The enterprise licence is AU$44.90. Copilot Chat, the basic version, costs nothing extra on an eligible Microsoft 365 plan.
Microsoft shows Australian business prices in AUD on its Copilot pricing page, and those prices do not include GST. Add 10 percent to budget the real cost: the Copilot Business add-on works out at about A$34.54 a seat a month on the yearly plan, or about A$41.45 a month paid monthly. The table below is what Microsoft listed on 29 October 2026.
| Plan | Paid yearly | Paid monthly | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Chat | Included | Included | Everyone on an eligible Microsoft 365 plan. Start here. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (add-on) | AU$31.40 a user a month, AU$26.91 promo for the first year | AU$37.68 a user a month | Small businesses already on a Microsoft 365 Business plan. |
| Business Standard with Copilot | AU$35.20 a user a month | AU$42.24 a user a month | Teams buying Microsoft 365 and Copilot together. |
| Business Premium with Copilot | AU$47.90 a user a month | AU$57.48 a user a month | Businesses that also need Premium's security and device management. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot (enterprise add-on) | AU$44.90 a user a month | AU$47.15 a month, still on an annual commitment | Organisations on enterprise Microsoft 365 plans. |
The promotional AU$26.91 rate has conditions. Microsoft says it is for existing customers on an eligible Business plan, needs an annual commitment, applies to the first year only, and runs for orders between 1 July and 31 December 2026. In year two you are on the standard price.
Is Microsoft Copilot free?
Partly. Copilot Chat comes at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 business plans. It answers questions from the web, works on files you upload and, in Outlook, can look across your email and calendar. What it cannot do is reason across all your company's documents, meetings and chats. That is what the paid licence adds.
This is the single biggest source of confusion we hear on calls. People try the free chat, find it no better than any other chatbot, and decide Copilot is underwhelming. They never saw the paid version working inside their own files. According to Microsoft's Copilot Chat overview, the split looks like this:
- Copilot Chat (free) covers web-grounded chat, file upload and analysis, image generation and enterprise data protection on work accounts. In Outlook it can work across your inbox, calendar and meetings. Access is standard, which means it can slow down when the service is busy.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot (paid) adds reasoning across everything you have permission to see: emails, meetings, chats, documents, SharePoint sites and files. It adds priority access, the stronger reasoning models, and the fuller Copilot experience inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Microsoft also sells consumer plans with Copilot built in, from AU$16 a month for Microsoft 365 Personal. Those are personal accounts. Do not run client work through them.
Is Microsoft 365 Copilot worth it for a small business?
It is worth it for people who spend their day in Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams and will change how they work. At AU$31.40 a month, a seat pays for itself if it saves a staff member costing AU$50 an hour about 40 minutes a month. It is not worth it for staff who will never open it.
The maths is the easy part. Forty minutes a month is a couple of meeting summaries and a few drafted replies. The hard part is that most licences never get to forty minutes. The pattern across our sales calls this month was blunt: Microsoft businesses want to stay in Microsoft, and the Copilot they already pay for is deployed but underused. A common belief is that owning Copilot licences means the business "has AI". It has a button. Whether anyone presses it is a separate question.
Copilot earns its keep fastest on:
- Email-heavy roles. Summarising long threads, drafting replies in your tone, pulling the action items out of a week of mail.
- Meetings. Recaps and follow-up actions from Teams meetings, so nobody spends twenty minutes writing notes after every call.
- Document drafting. First drafts of reports, proposals and procedures in Word, built from the files you already have.
- Finding things. "What did we agree with this client about variations?" answered from your email and SharePoint, not your memory.
It is a weaker fit for building custom tools, automating multi-step jobs across non-Microsoft software, or heavy work on long documents, where a tool like Claude often does better. Our Claude vs Copilot guide covers that decision for businesses that already pay for Microsoft 365.
How should a small business roll out Copilot?
Start everyone on free Copilot Chat. Buy paid seats only for the two or three people whose day is email, meetings and documents, and give them a month on real work. Keep the seats that are used weekly, cancel the rest, then decide on the wider team.
Monthly billing costs about 20 percent more than yearly, but it lets you cancel. For a trial with a handful of people, that flexibility is worth the extra few dollars. Lock in the yearly price, or the promo, once you know who will use it.
- Check your files first. Copilot only sees what each person already has permission to see. If your SharePoint permissions are loose, a paid seat will happily surface the payroll folder to whoever asks. Tidy access before you switch it on.
- Pick the jobs, not the people. Name three tasks per role that Copilot should take over, like the Monday inbox, meeting follow-ups and the monthly report.
- Show each person on their own work. A launch email changes nothing. Twenty minutes with someone building the habit on their own inbox does. That is the whole idea behind our hands-on Copilot training.
- Review at 30 days. Microsoft's admin centre shows who is using Copilot. Unused seats are the easiest saving you will make all year.
Already paying for Copilot and not sure anyone uses it? Our Copilot training puts each person to work on their own email, documents and meetings, so the licences start paying their way.
See Copilot trainingWhat costs come on top of the licence?
The licence is rarely the whole bill. Agents and some advanced features are billed by usage, automations may need Power Automate licences, and the biggest cost of all is seats paid for and never used. Budget for setup and training time, not just the monthly fee.
- Usage-based features. Microsoft's pricing page notes that usage-based billing applies to select advanced AI features, and that custom agents an organisation builds can run on a metered basis. If you plan to build agents, read our guide to Copilot agents before you budget.
- Automation licences. Jobs that run on their own, like reading every incoming approval document into a register, usually run through Power Automate rather than Copilot itself, and some of those flows need a premium Power Automate licence on top. Check current Power Automate pricing with Microsoft before you commit.
- Copilot Studio builds. Custom agents in Copilot Studio are where Copilot gets genuinely useful for specific jobs, and where costs depend on how much they run.
- Unused seats. A seat costs the same whether it saves ten hours a week or none.
Copilot, ChatGPT or Claude: which should you pay for?
If your business lives in Microsoft 365 and your data has to stay there, Copilot is the natural first choice. If you mainly want a strong assistant for writing, research and building tools, ChatGPT or Claude usually give more for the money. Plenty of businesses end up with Copilot plus one of the others.
The question to ask is not which AI is smartest. It is where your work and your data live, and who will actually use it. Our ChatGPT vs Copilot vs Claude comparison goes job by job, and if you want help deciding what to build inside Microsoft, our Microsoft AI services cover Copilot, Copilot Studio, Power Automate and Power BI.
Turn on the free chat for everyone, pay for Copilot only where someone will use it every week, and cancel the seats nobody opens.
Common questions
Do Microsoft's Australian Copilot prices include GST?
No. Microsoft's business prices are shown before GST, and the checkout adds it before you pay. If your business is registered for GST you can generally claim it back as a credit; confirm the treatment with your accountant.
Is there a free trial of Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Microsoft lists a one-month free trial on some business plans. It needs a credit card and converts to a paid subscription automatically when the month ends, so set a reminder before you start.
Can I buy Copilot for just some of my staff?
Yes. Copilot is licensed per user, so you can add it to the few people who will use it most and leave everyone else on free Copilot Chat. That is how we suggest most small businesses start.
What is the difference between Copilot Business and Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Copilot Business is the version sold alongside Microsoft 365 Business plans, which cover up to 300 users. Microsoft 365 Copilot at AU$44.90 is the enterprise add-on for larger organisations on enterprise plans. For a small business, Copilot Business is the one to look at.
Does Copilot use our data to train its models?
On work accounts, Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot run with Microsoft's enterprise data protection and respect your existing Microsoft 365 permissions. The bigger risk is staff putting company work into personal accounts or consumer plans.
